Entrepreneurial Ambitions

follow-your-dreams-universe-quote-nicki-galper
We all have dreams. Some are grand, vivid dreams. And others are more tame in comparison but they are still visions which we would like to bring into fruition. When you think about dreams though, you typically think about imaginations which stay in your head. The only time you experience them is when you transition your thoughts to the place where they reside within your mind. What is life when you are only truly happy when residing within the imaginative confines of your mind?

The Jump Off!

Image

Have you ever had that feeling in your chest…that feeling of uncertainty…that feeling of uncertainty of whether or not you are going to be able to take another breath?  In my mind there suddenly is nothing surrounding me.  My environment falls silent and still.  It’s not anxiety necessarily.  It’s this deep level of excitement!  It’s this energy in my chest, in my heart, that makes me feel very expansive!  I’ve heard people describe “living in bliss” in this way!  Once I slow down enough to realize what I am really experiencing, it makes me that much more excited!… Am I using too many exclamation points?!  I am using too many exclamation points!… It just dawned on me that this is the Jump Off!

After years of talking a very convincing game, testing out the entrepreneurial waters and failing a couple of times, I believe I have finally found my rhythm.  After years of studying, planning and plotting…After countless Business and Marketing Strategy Plans…After resting in a contemplative state for at least 20 minutes a day trying to devise that master plan to create a particular type of life for myself and my loved ones, all while serving others…I sit here, at my laptop experiencing the most unreal outer body experience!  Cloud nine, for real!… I finally committed to the Jump Off!

I launched my website and let it be known to the beautiful people of the ethers tonight!  I am elated because at this point there is no turning back.  I have more than just my mom and my brother to answer to.  They’ve heard the spiel so many times, I literally have to start bringing in some serious money before they will believe me.  Which is fine.  I totally get it… But this time is different!  I built this website and today I was going door to door selling my idea.  This time I am more than just all talk!  How frightening it is to realize that!  What an amazing feeling!  Now, don’t get me wrong…it took all those years studying and planning and figuring out how to talk a decent game (which I am still working on!).  It was all in preparation for the right place, at the right time.  So here it is, the beginning of an amazing trip!  I finally caught my breath and I am feeling more comfortable with the spinning of the room!  I am so thankful to finally be at the Jump Off!

So please share your positive vibes, if you don’t mind…

First off…Happy 2014 to all you beautiful people out in the ether!  This is my first post of the new year.  I have been on this 100 day challenge trip and it has been going quite well!  I have been getting my ars kicked at Crossfit every day, but it’s cool!  It’s all for the greater good, right?!  So when I am on the treadmill working out the cardio aspect of my regiment I listen to this really amazing podcast called “The Tropical MBA Podcast.”  It is a very informative podcast about entrepreneurship and building a business based on the type of lifestyle you want to live.  I highly recommend it!

Anyhow, today I was listening to the podcast and the subject was things we can learn from former guests of the show and all other entrepreneurs, really.  They kicked the show off by sharing what we can learn from the teachings of the great Notorious BIG…I am telling you, these guys are brilliant!  I wanted to share with you what Dan and Ian of Tropical MBA were saying about the 10 Crack Commandments and how they apply to entrepreneurship…

The 10 Crack Commandments

1. “Never let no one know how much dough you hold”

Never brag about that money…

2. “Never let ’em know your next move”

Don’t talk about your future plans…

3. “Never trust nobody”

It’s not validated unless they’ve paid you money…

4. “Never get high on your own supply”

Don’t believe your hype…

5. “Never sell no crack where you rest at”

Home offices aren’t always a great idea…

6. “That credit…Dead it! You think a crackhead paying you back…Forget it!”

Net 30 is for suckas…

7. “This rule is so underrated. Keep your family and business completely separated”

Your brother is not that good of a developer anyway…

8. “Never keep no weight on you”

It’s best not to resolve your internal company conflicts on the social media outlets…

9. “Number 9 shoulda been number 1 to me: If you ain’t gettin’ bagged, stay the #$&* away

     from police”

Don’t link your business name to your google accounts…

10. “If you ain’t got the clientele, say “h@#$ no!”

If you purchase inventory before your customers ordered the product, you’re in deep trouble…

Some wise words from Biggie, Ian and Dan!  Check out that podcast and I wish everyone luck on your business building endeavors in 2014!

The Thing About Love…

Image

The thing about love…It’s crazy what it makes you do and think.  How we behave, how we see ourselves, how we change through it and for it.  I’ve been in love…many times.  That one time I committed to marriage, for nine years.  Gave those years to that one person.  The one that meant so much before I was old enough to even know what that truly meant.  But still I rode it out, until it died that slow, quiet death.  When you come to the point where the passion has been gone for so long and there is nothing else holding on to you and you can finally look at that person and honestly say “we did the best we could, but it was over quite a few years ago.”  And then there was the rebound…It was a passionate love, accompanied by the notion that I was not going to make the same mistakes that I made with my marriage.  I vowed to myself that I was going to be fierce and express what I want and not settle for less.  He loved that openness  and honesty and passion.  It was nothing he had ever known before, and it scared him.  A love without the typical complications?  It couldn’t be real!  Years after the demise of that love, he still sends me messages every year when he is intoxicated and is reminded by the loneliness of the holidays. and I appreciate those moments of the residual emotions…And then there was the most profound love.  I could write a book on what love should look like based on this one.  But circumstances supposedly pulled it apart.  I decided to be more honest, than fierce.  To really give myself up to the one, and be me completely for him.  It seemed perfect, unhindered, at first.  This grand love was not to be so.  Full of deceit and fear on both his part as well as mine.  Cherishing so much what it was, I almost would’ve told myself anything to believe it was right…All in all, what I did learn is that true love is not created with or for someone else.  True love is the love one has for themselves.  True love is when one does not need the reassurance, or affirmation, or accommodation of others.  It is once you are so sound and comfortable with being in a room by yourself, hearing your own voice, and developing a positive and healthy relationship with the inner chatter that you can actually learn to appreciate the company with another human being, hopefully with another human being that appreciates there own inner dialogue just the same.  So my advice to you, keep practicing loving and accepting.  Be kind to yourself.  Be passionate about all that is around you, all that you are about and eventually you will find the one that is equally as passionate about you.  Namaste! 🙂

I am not sure if I am subconsciously seeking out these particular ebooks, podcasts, emails and articles, or if it is some magical synchronicity or if we are all on the same page and this is just what is trending…OR, as 2013 comes to a close, we are all reading and writing about how to make 2014 the most successful year of our lives…But today has been a very inspiring day for me!

It all started with an online coupon I found for the local cross fit center, a one month unlimited trial for $39, which for anyone who is familiar with cross fit, you know this is a steal!  So I decided I have to give it a shot… Later on, I was listening to my favorite podcast “The Lifestyle Business” and the hosts were talking about being productive and focusing on more creative, content and lead generating work as oppose to doing busy work like checking email and Facebook… Apparently I am not alone in thinking it is far too easy to fall into this trap considering all the software out there meant to time you out of your Facebook sesh, in case you do not have the will power yourself.

Then this evening I stumbled upon this awesome Twitter profile that has vowed to tweet three times a day, everyday, in regard to their trials and tribulations in building successful apps.  And finally, to top it all off, I received an email about a 100 day challenge, plan out goals and work everyday for 100 days and start this next year out right!  I feel like something is trying to tell me something!  Ok then, 100 Day Challenge it is!

I am warming up right now but I will officially kick it off January 2nd.  I do not want to call this a “New Years Resolution” because there are so many negative feelings surrounding that label.  What I really want to accomplish is the development of better habits and focus on a more healthy, effective, efficient lifestyle.  So I have devised a list of goals for the first 100 days (minus January 1st just because that is a re-coop day! 😉 ) of 2014…

I would get into the details of my list but I would imagine we all have our own list and no one really cares to hear about mine specifically, but I will say that it involves looking at how I spend my waking hours and making sure that every waking hour is spent bettering myself in some way, which will in turn positively affect my business building, and family raising efforts….And burpees at 5 am!  I will also blog about my progress to keep myself in check and make sure I stay committed to what I am saying while I am in such a great mood! 🙂

And if you want, we can do this together!  It just makes sense to focus on the first quarter and set the precedence for the rest of the year.  So let’s do this!  Let’s make 2014 huge!

The Magic of Twitter!

Image

Throughout my journey into the wide open spaces of social media I have read and learned first hand that it is a daunting task to jump into the sea of comments, likes, and shares!  So many posts, articles and studies to read!  And how exactly am I suppose to acquire followers?  How am I suppose to be heard?  I also heard that successful entrepreneurs started with a mentor early on.  How do I find a mentor?

It seemed to me that anyone who has enjoyed any substantial level of success more than likely has so many people pining for their time and attention.  The idea of simply hitting up a grand and powerful CEO to ask for some golden nugget of advice would be virtually impossible.  But I kept plugging away.  Reading through tweets, marking favorite, and occasionally making a comment or two.

One night I caught a new tweet from a TED_ED Brain Trust educator/entrepreneur, who tweeted about listening to Carlos Santana while battling jet lag…Wait! So successful, jet setting entrepreneurs are people too?…So I commented on his music selection, not even thinking that this person would have the time or the interest in replying…But he did!  Norris Krueger, a scholar, replied to my comment!  Now for those of you savvy in the social media Universe, this may not be a big deal to you, but to me, this was the jump off!  This was the moment that I realized I can connect with anyone, anywhere in the world!  I can learn from and network along side major players in the game!  Twitter is the even playing ground!  Then it dawned on me that Mr. Krueger has damn near 150,000 followers, the likes of Brian Tracy and Guy Kawasaki!  Oh, all the potential friends and connections to be made!

This gave me an extra boost, extra motivation to really get to know the twitter community!  I have only been really working on building a network on Twitter for about a month or so and I already have about 200 followers (insert plug…Follow me @tolbert_martyne) ;).  May not be much but I feel it is a good start!  Plus, I am following over 600 of the most interesting people and trying to gain as much knowledge and wisdom as I possibly can.  I see the advantages in connecting on Twitter.  Give it a shot, if you haven’t already.  It’s a magical thing!  And I’ll see you out in the ether!
