The Magic of Twitter!

Image

Throughout my journey into the wide open spaces of social media I have read and learned first hand that it is a daunting task to jump into the sea of comments, likes, and shares!  So many posts, articles and studies to read!  And how exactly am I suppose to acquire followers?  How am I suppose to be heard?  I also heard that successful entrepreneurs started with a mentor early on.  How do I find a mentor?

It seemed to me that anyone who has enjoyed any substantial level of success more than likely has so many people pining for their time and attention.  The idea of simply hitting up a grand and powerful CEO to ask for some golden nugget of advice would be virtually impossible.  But I kept plugging away.  Reading through tweets, marking favorite, and occasionally making a comment or two.

One night I caught a new tweet from a TED_ED Brain Trust educator/entrepreneur, who tweeted about listening to Carlos Santana while battling jet lag…Wait! So successful, jet setting entrepreneurs are people too?…So I commented on his music selection, not even thinking that this person would have the time or the interest in replying…But he did!  Norris Krueger, a scholar, replied to my comment!  Now for those of you savvy in the social media Universe, this may not be a big deal to you, but to me, this was the jump off!  This was the moment that I realized I can connect with anyone, anywhere in the world!  I can learn from and network along side major players in the game!  Twitter is the even playing ground!  Then it dawned on me that Mr. Krueger has damn near 150,000 followers, the likes of Brian Tracy and Guy Kawasaki!  Oh, all the potential friends and connections to be made!

This gave me an extra boost, extra motivation to really get to know the twitter community!  I have only been really working on building a network on Twitter for about a month or so and I already have about 200 followers (insert plug…Follow me @tolbert_martyne) ;).  May not be much but I feel it is a good start!  Plus, I am following over 600 of the most interesting people and trying to gain as much knowledge and wisdom as I possibly can.  I see the advantages in connecting on Twitter.  Give it a shot, if you haven’t already.  It’s a magical thing!  And I’ll see you out in the ether!

I had heard that so long as you could spell entrepreneur, then you’re in!  Oh, all the lovely fantasies about being your own boss, making your own schedule, creating something, impacting other people’s lives, starting a movement, AND the vacations you will take!  I have already purchased my dream home…in my mind!  The idea of financial freedom is so incredible!  E-N-T-R-E-P-R-E-N-E-U-R!!!!!  Sign me up!

So I went ahead and made the decision and completely abandoned the idea of ever getting a real job again.  I have read countless books, articles, and magazines!  I have subscribed to countless podcasts and newsletter!  I’ve got my dream board up on my wall and I stare at it in a meditative state as I channel all my energy into manifesting my dream life.  I can see it so clearly I can almost touch it!  And of course I’ve read Napoleon Hill’s “Think and Grow Rich”…THREE times now!  So as far as I know, I have completely prepped my psyche for being an innovative entrepreneur that is really going to make a difference in this world!  At this point I am ready to get to it!  I’ve been studying and planning…now it’s time to start DOING!

Now there is no turning back!  I’m making that leap!… So now what do I do?  All that research…surely I would know what to do first!  And then it struck me!  I am my own boss, I make my own schedule and what that means is I do not have anyone to tell me what my deadline is and I do not have anyone to answer to.  I have no one else’s expectations to meet but my own.  I have to keep myself motivated, and inspired and constantly remind myself of my purpose and that everything will be ok!

We go our entire lives being told what to do and when to do it.  Suddenly entrepreneurship became a little frightening!  Like being thrown out in the deep end of the pool, not knowing how to swim and having to just figure it out as you go.  And what happens when the inevitable big mistake or failure rears it’s ugly head?  A moment that most all successful entrepreneurs say is important to embrace, by the way…Fantastic!  It is up to you to pick yourself up and dust yourself off and keep it movin’!

I took a deep breath and told myself I am just going to take it one day at a time.  I’m going to keep my eye on the prize and continue to research my questions and concerns as they come up, after all Google does know everything!

When I start to get overwhelmed or discouraged I think about the Napoleon Hills, the Henry Fords, the Thomas Edisons, the Soichiro Hondas and the some 85% of successful entrepreneurs who started from the bottom.  I also think about all the resources available to me today.  There is absolutely no reason to not, at very least, give it a shot!  And one last thought…

“Tis better to have loved and lost, than never to have loved at all.”

–     Alfred Lord Tennyson

I do not want to wonder what could’ve been.  So here I go!  I’m going to take the plunge!  I’m all in!

Entrepreneurship…I do!

I just came across this post. Very inspiring! I am going to be more proactive in living for my dreams! If you need a boost check out Jeff Moore’s blog! He shares a lot of inspirational and motivational ideas! Love it!

Live your dreams!

What’s more important to you? Approval or your dreams? We will all reach a point in our lives where our dreams might not line up with the approval of others. The turning point is: What do you do next? Do you talk yourself out of it, tell yourself it’s not that important, think everyone else around you knows whats best and decide to play it safe and small. Or do you recognize that the approval from others has little to do with you and more to do with them. You can do little if anything, to keep the approval from others coming in.

Take chances, live your dream life and have peace with the fact that many more will admire you for your ability to make a big decision! Have greater peace in knowing that by following your heart you are making the transition from existing to…

So my good friend, Shalene, came across a contest through a talk show that she follows and told me about it.  The contest was to pitch a great business idea and win a $20,000 prize!  She suggested I give it a shot.  To begin with, it was such a great feeling knowing that one of my dear friends had such faith in me and my business venture.  So I was on my way, seeking out my 15 minutes of fame!

The contest was sponsored by Skype and the idea was to use Skype to send a quick video message explaining my business idea.  I was so inspired!  I wrote out a script, rehearsed it about 50 times, I set up a lovely backdrop behind me, and logged onto Skype.  It was so great because it gave me an opportunity to really get my message direct, precise and to the point in less than two minutes…Click Send!  And wait…and wait…and wait some more!

I meditated on it for days!  I visualized what it will be like to sit on the couch and be interviewed by the show’s host.  I had read somewhere that to really program your thoughts and subconscious chatter, it is a good trick to write down what your burning desire is.  Everyday, I wrote “I won $20,000” about thirty times in my journal and then read it back.  I was in the zone!  Like an Olympic athlete, I visualized exactly how it was all going to go down!  Then I started thinking to myself, if I only have fifteen minutes of fame, what could I say to fully utilize my short time and truly impact my life, impact others lives, impact the world?!  I mean, in my mind, I was absolutely going to be placed in front of a million+ viewers!  How incredible it would be to be on that platform and not to mention how $20,000 would catapult my health and wellness internet company to the next level!  I was really pumping myself up!  My heart and mind was spinning!  My daily attitude was so positive, people noticed the extra pep in my step!  I was planning on hanging on to this feeling for the rest of my life, it felt so good…And I hadn’t even won yet!…

SO, the waiting was over, and the results were in.  I was not one of the three finalists.  My business involves connecting local businesses that offer health and wellness solutions with the community, all with the hopes to raise up the local economy collectively.  My plan is to increase social awareness and health consciousness.  Really make an honest and sincere difference in this world!  What I did not consider was the premise of the talk show and the audience.

This talk show focused more on finding the best fashion trends, the best wrinkle cream and the how-to’s such as how-to please your husband, how-to get your kids to school on time and still look good doing it!  All important subjects to many people, but may not be quite the audience or more importantly the atmosphere conducive for my particular genre.  Regardless, this was a great, eye-opening experience for me as a budding entrepreneur!

I learned many things!  For one, it is all about the market segment, the audience.  I know now that I need to be very aware as to who I am speaking to and at what time of the day it is.  Certain times of the day we may be a fashionista, car-pooling mothers and at other times we are health nuts looking to find a great yoga instructor.  So yes, market awareness is crucial!

The other lesson I learned is that a good positive attitude and a definite purpose does wonders!  Visualizing the end result and being at that peak energetic level makes the creation of any project or business venture that much more exciting and invigorating!  So many business gurus and motivational writers and speakers such as Tony Robbins, Brian Tracy, Les Brown, Earl Nightingale, Jim Rohn, Napoleon Hill (and the list goes on) all send out a similar messages.  Develop a burning, undeniable desire and visualize the desired results until you accomplish your goals.  I vow to myself that I will not stop and I will continue to be excited and preserver and know that my success is inevitable!

Know that your success is inevitable as well!  Go out there and achieve your dreams and goals!  In the words of one of the greatest bands of all time, Journey, “Don’t Stop Believing!”

Homeless…In a BMW

Image

I walk through this beautiful park in my neighborhood everyday on my way to the gym.  It’s set in suburbia land amongst grand victorian homes and new custom homes that range from $500,000-$800,000. The town is a little gem in the Inland Empire of Southern California, populated by some of the highly esteemed Doctors, Lawyers, and Entrepreneurs in the region.  It is very unusual to find a vagrant roaming the streets.  I grew up in this quaint town, and although my family certainly wasn’t anywhere near the upper echelon, I did attend high school with kids who drove raised trucks, supped up Camaros and sporty BMWs…

As I walked through this exceptionally manicured park I noticed a BMW SUV in the parking lot, jam packed full of boxes and luggage.  Initially I didn’t think much of it.  The first thought that crossed my mind was that these people were on a camping trip.  I didn’t consider any other explanation, even though the park does not have any sort of camp site area, I mean come on…It’s a BMW!

A week later I saw the same SUV in the parking lot.  I walked slowly past (unseen by the occupants, at a bit of a distance) and really investigated what was going on just because I was perplexed.  A young family emerged from the very tightly packed car.  A father got out and grabbed a stroller and then went to the backseat to grab his little one out of the car.  The mother opened up the back hatch and started pulling boxes out in search of something.  It then dawned on me this wasn’t a family going on a family camping trip, nor were they just moving into town, being that their car was in the same condition a week later.

It suddenly struck me that none of us are immune to the prospect of falling to such a horrible fate.  It has been said that most all Americans are one illness away from bankruptcy.  I may have misinterpreted the situation but it made me think about thinking twice the next time I see a homeless person or the next time I am asked for money.  I am going to make a point to give whenever I am asked because many of us aimlessly blow $5 here $10 there and to a person down on their luck that $10 means the world to them.  It means no longer worrying about how to get that next meal, and my problems aren’t nearly that bad.

I feel we really need to make a shift in our awareness and recognize how important it is to look after our fellow man.  Not every homeless person is a junky, clouded by a lifetime of bad decisions and if this family is in fact homeless, living in a BMW, they are a testament that sometimes bad things happen to people who at one point had the ambition to at least be in the position to purchase a BMW.  Just another reason why we need to work on building that healthy village together!  Let’s stand up for each other!  Let’s brainstorm together on how to fight this growing epidemic of extensive unemployment, homelessness and disconnect form community!  This is my “call to action” because there are far too many beautiful minds out there, wasting away worrying about where they are going to sleep and how they are going to get there next meal.

Nothing is impossible, the word itself says, “I’m possible!” –Audrey Hepburn

I have read quite a few books now on success, entrepreneurship, business planning, motivation, inspiration, etc.  and what I have found to be the absolute common denominator  that most all the successful people seem to agree on is that if you truly believe, you will succeed.  It we have the vision of success so deeply rooted into our minds and allow no other option, then it is in fact just a matter of time.

Some might suggest this to be wishful thinking but not very realistic.  I look to those that have ever made the decision to run a marathon.  The idea of running a marathon is so “impossible” to many, but the fact is that so many people have put their mind to it, stayed determined, made the time and put in the work to condition themselves, and they have achieved that amazing goal of running 26 miles!

What is so beautiful about the time that we are now living in, is that we all have immediate access to the experience, knowledge and wisdom of those that came before us and were successful.  We have all the tools and resources we need at a click of the mouse.  So there is no reason not to achieve our goals, make our dreams come true, be successful and wealthy.  Nothing in this world is impossible.. improbable, maybe…challenging, of course…but certainly not impossible.  I read this amazing article on Forbes.com “By Their Bootstraps: Billionaires Who Started From Scratch” and it notes many of the wealthiest people and how at one point they were just like you and me, hanging on to a dream, and fighting for that success…

Howard Schultz grew up in the projects in Brooklyn. John Paul DeJoria sold shampoo while living out of his car. Oprah’s first audience was the congregation at her grandmother’s church in rural Mississippi. Today they are all billionaires, folks with 10-figure fortunes who grew up in the school of hard knocks.

Of the billionaires on the 2013 Forbes 400 list, 273 qualify as “self-made.”

Out of 400, 273 started out from nothing!  No backing, no money, and some with little education.  I don’t know about you, but that really gets me motivated!  Makes me want to spend every waking hour trying to improve my chances!

We are so lucky to be here, in this part of the world, in this moment in time, with all these resources!  So let’s get on it!  I implore everyone to write down there dreams and aspirations, and then write down a plan as to how you can accomplish it.  Why not?  What is the worst that could happen?  You dive deeper into it and find that maybe your idea isn’t as solid as you originally thought and you might have to tweak it a little, which in turn might open up the flood gates, dispel the negative thoughts as to why it wouldn’t work, and finally get moving in the direction towards your wealth and success!  Then send the same message out to your loved one, your children especially!  Let’s all move up on the chain together!  Let’s build a society full of optimistic, successful, inspired, motivated, and innovative people!  Let’s build a generation full of people that knows anything is possible!

Who am I, anyway?!  It is strange to really look at yourself in the mirror and try to figure it all out.  This multi-fasited personality, all the strange facial expressions, the simple, little quirks that nobody but those closest to me pick up on.  The idiosyncrasies.  My grandmother’s earlobes.  The mood swings between my mother and father’s personalities.

It is amazing how we all keep a handle on the many different “I am’s” hanging out in our minds at all times.  Every personality, ready to perform it’s duty right when the situation calls for it.  The expressions that go along with that particular personalty, and my mother’s voice clearly making itself known in a slightly haunting way.

How and why did I pick these particular traits?  They have all served me and have worked against me throughout my life experiences.  I’ve offended a few more than I’d like to admit, thanks to my dad’s obscene sense of humor.  I have lost jobs over my mom’s quick wit and edgy ability to talk down to a supervisor.  On the flip side, I have entertained more than I have offended and I have come a long way as a leader and soon to be business owner, all thanks to these traits that my parents have bestowed upon me.  Thanks to my genes, like my Aunt Leona, I have to pencil my eyebrows in everyday (the redheads in the family do not have eyebrows).  Thanks to my Aunt Edna I have a wicked witches cackle for a laugh, but I have been told it is a contagious cackle.  When I am debating global political or economic conditions I scrunch my forehead and contort my face in to the most sincere “eat shit” glare that I picked up from my brother.

Over time, I realized that it was not the traits individually that was the problem, but rather the way I use them collectively.  I have been practicing my entire life and continue to work towards perfecting my delivery.  The way I synchronize my actions, the tone and pace of my voice, and the look in my eyes.  In one instant I have the look of my dad’s eyes when he’s telling a hilarious story about what it was like growing up with 12 siblings in North Dakota.  And then suddenly I have the look of my mom’s eyes when she is offering some kind and sound advice.  When I orchestrate my communication skills in proper fashion, I have found that the catch phrases of past friends and lovers become very effective in getting my point across.

So who am I and where did my “I am” come from?… It came from all the beautiful people that have crossed my path.  It came from both nature and nurture.  And I am thankful for the people who made me who I am. 🙂

ImageSo here we are… 3rd blog!  And 4th day of working on my empire, from scratch!  After my experience, Thursday, with going door to door to local businesses pitching my idea, conducting research, I decided I need to get my house in order.  I started conducting research on how to have a website built.  I have looked into having a web designer do it for me and going off on my own.  To have a website built is free…To get it noticed is a whole other story!  Even when you study up on all the services available it’s hard to find out which option is the better deal.  And if you aren’t online marketing savvy, it all begins to sound like a foreign language!  And what is the difference between a $25 a month Search Engine Optimization package and a $159 SEO package, anyway?  My head is spinning!

Now thanks to this blog I have met a couple of interesting people who are into online affiliate network marketing.  Basically advertising other peoples products on your page.  I’ve spent the day watching recruiting videos and googling the company’s for possible scams.  It all sounds great and most check out!  And it is made to sound easy, but without truly getting into the details as to what work is involved on my part.  So again, what is the difference between the $25/month affiliate program and the $159/month affiliate program?  Are we seeing a trend here?

I came across a link for a motivational speaker, Kevin Trudeau.  He had some interesting points in his lecture.  He made reference to some of my favorite entrepreneurs/motivational speakers and suggested that many of these other speakers offer a lot of valuable information but they are missing a couple of major points….And for $159/ month all questions will be answered! 😉  (Kidding!)  Don’t get me wrong, I love listening to all the positive affirmations, every day in fact!  But it has been suggested that some people have made a lot of money talking about how easy it is to make a lot of money and really have no personal “come up” story… Wait… Brilliant!!!!!!

Writers write books to sell books, motivational speakers sell lectures, and online affiliate marketers market to sell space.  Is there really anything wrong with all that?  Unfortunately, a couple of scams out there in the ether have left a bad taste in the mouths of the novice.  And it is especially disheartening when you come across a philosophy or technique that resonates with you and then is discredited by others…. So, Yes I want to join your book club, but how do I know your book club is right for me?…I suppose that is the ultimate marketers dilemma.  How to get a person on board?  How to sell an idea?  How to get my blog out to the masses?…The million dollar questions!

Chapter 4: Faith from “Think and Grow Rich,” by Napoleon Hill… In this chapter Hill discusses having faith in your desires, knowing that it is very possible.  I’d like to think that if I maintain strong faith that everything is going to work out (along with working hard, of course), then I will align myself with the right people and opportunities at the right time!

Sweet dreams all you beautiful people! 🙂

Just a quick follow up…Well maybe not too quick!… I was on one last night!  Started my first blog, activated my twitter and LinkedIn accounts and linked them all up to my Facebook!  I have suddenly become Social Media Friendly, which is strange for me because I am not very savvy.  Nor have I ever thought that I would have the need.  Well, in this fast pace world the New Age Marketing is Social Media… All you aficionados are thinking “yada, yada, yada” I would image. 😉

So anyway… I was in the zone!  Woke up excited to start the day!  I get out on the street and hit up every business down a very busy main street in my area.  What I found was that there were moments when I thought I was really enjoying this door to door sales thing and then other times I thought to myself “Man I can’t wait to pay someone else to do this shit!”  Of all the businesses I did make contact with only 25% of them gave me an absolute NO, not interested.  75% possible acceptance on day 1?!  Not too bad, right?!  Tomorrow, day 2, I am going to try cold calling and see if actual face time truly makes a difference.

On a side note… Napoleon Hill wrote “Think and Grow Rich” in 1937.  He did a 20 year study on the wealthiest people in the country at that time.  He studied the likes of Andrew Carnegie, Henry Ford, and John D. Rockefeller, so I would imagine you all would agree that Napoleon Hill would’ve been considered an authority on the subject of growing wealth.  When I get ready for work I put on a Napoleon Hill lecture via youtube.  I even went out and bought the book “Think and Grow Rich” because I heard that reading plants the seed further into your mind and writing, even more so.  The second chapter of the book is entitled “Desire: The Starting Point of All Achievement.”  In this chapter, Hill suggests writing down your one true desire if you knew you had no limitations.  So my question to you is this… What is your true desire?  If you knew you had no limitations what would you be doing with your life?  If you knew money was in fact no object, where would you be right now?  I think it would be so amazing to start a conversation on the subject!  Get a lil feedback!  I know I am new to this social media deal but if my blog happens to reach you, where ever you are, post a comment! The insight gained would be greatly appreciated!

I’m glad we had this talk!  Tomorrow is a new day, new opportunity to try something new, test a better technique to get my message across.  I am looking forward to it!  Good night all you beautiful people! 🙂

   One last thing!!!…

Namaste!

I have led a pretty amazing life thus far!  I have spent pretty much my entire life going to school and tending bar.  I have been so fortunate to try out many different majors and have finally decided to graduate!  Every position of employment I have ever had has always been an improvement from the previous!  I have a beautiful, loving and very supportive family!  I have met some incredibly fascinating people throughout my journey.  I have been deeply in love a couple of times and I have had the opportunity to learn from heart break, as well!    I have never been abused in any way.  I have pretty much walked through this life unscathed!…And then suddenly, things came to a head!

All within the past two weeks I received a notice that my very hefty student loans were going to go into repayment, my place of employment that I loved so much decided to do a little restructuring which meant getting rid of a couple of us with seniority, and my supposed twin flame and I decided to go our separate ways.  I once heard that the universe will not give us more than we can handle, but as I sit obsessively staring at the postings online in search of that next much improved opportunity, I start to think.  I begin to ponder, is this really what it’s all about?  The old, supposedly reliable hamster wheel?  This is not me and it is definitely not what I want to be doing with my life….

We’ve all heard the story about the self-made millionaire and how he was down on his luck, unemployed with nothing but the shirt on his back and a dream, and with his last $500 he built a multi-million dollar empire.  Well I decided that I want my story to sound just like that! I think we should all have a story that sounds like that!

So here I am blogging to the ether in hopes that someone catches the signal.  The Grand Master Plan is to tell the world my “Break Through” story as it unfolds.  My back is currently up against the wall and the pressure is mounting.  I’ve suddenly become a part of the growing statistic (the jobless graduate), but I refuse to succumb to the pressure.  The time is now!  I will start my own business!

I have started my research and have written a business plan.  My vision is to help local small businesses increase their revenue and thrive by administering sound cross-marketing campaigns geared towards the immediate community.  The targeted businesses would be those that offer products and services in the realm of health, wellness, fitness and beauty.  So in essence I want to build a healthy village.  As I continue to study, research and try different strategies, I will blog about what I’ve learned, what’s working, what’s not working and I hope you will reach out to me and post comments.  Let’s open up a dialogue, learn from each other and maybe others will want to take from this conversation and start their own business.  Maybe if we could watch the progression from the beginning, we will realize that not only is anything possible, but anyone can do it.  So let’s do it!  Let’s build our healthy villages together!

Tomorrow is day 1… Marketing Research.  I will go door to door to ask business owners if there is any interest in my services, find that possible niche.  Wish me luck! 🙂

I’ll leave you with this… Les Brown is one of my favorite motivational speakers.  This video speaks to me.  Hopefully you’ll find some value in it as well.  Namaste!
